Bates in Exports

Last updated: 2026-03-23

The Bates section of the Export Wizard lets you stamp exported documents with sequential Bates numbers. Toggle numbering on, then configure prefix, suffix, position, mode, and typography. Hintyr pulls smart defaults from your existing case configuration, and your original files are never modified.

Enabling Bates numbering in production exports

Check "Apply Bates numbers to exported documents" to turn on numbering. The configuration panel expands to show all options. Leave it unchecked and documents export without Bates stamps.

If you have already configured Bates settings for the case through Bates numbering, the Export Wizard automatically pulls those settings as defaults. You can adjust them for this specific production without affecting the case-level configuration.

Bates numbering mode for production documents

The Mode dropdown offers two options:

  • Page - Each page of each document receives a unique sequential number. A 10-page document will use 10 Bates numbers.
  • Document - Each document receives a single Bates number regardless of page count. A 10-page document uses one number.

Bates stamp position on production pages

The Position dropdown determines where the Bates stamp appears on each page. Options include Auto (Hintyr chooses the best position to avoid overlapping content), Bottom Right, Bottom Left, Top Right, and Top Left. The preview panel updates in real time to show where the stamp will appear.

Bates prefix and suffix configuration

The Prefix field sets the text that appears before the sequential number (for example, "PROD" produces stamps like PROD000001). The Suffix field appends text after the number (for example, a suffix of "-LOG" produces PROD000001-LOG). Both fields accept up to 20 characters.

Bates starting index and padding digits

The Start field sets the first number in the sequence. For a supplemental production, set this to the number following the last stamp in the previous set. The Digits field controls the minimum number of digits used in the number. With 6 digits, the number 1 becomes "000001." The padding range is 1 to 15 digits.

Bates stamp typography settings

Three controls let you customize the appearance of the Bates stamp text:

  • Font - Choose from Helvetica, Arial, Franklin Gothic, Times New Roman, or Courier.
  • Size - Set the font size in points, from 8 to 72. The default of 10 pt is standard for most productions.
  • Color - Choose Black, White, Orange, or Red. Black is the most common choice for formal productions.

Original files are not modified by Bates stamping

Hintyr generates new copies of each document with the stamp embedded. Your original files stay unchanged. You can produce the same documents multiple times with different Bates configurations without touching the source material.

Frequently asked questions

Does the export use my existing Bates settings?
Yes. The Export Wizard pulls smart defaults from any Bates configuration you have set at the case level. You can adjust the settings for this specific production without changing the case defaults.
What is the difference between Page and Document mode?
Page mode assigns a unique number to each page of each document. Document mode assigns a single number per document regardless of page count. Page mode is standard for most formal productions.
Can I continue a Bates sequence from a previous production?
Yes. Set the Starting Index to the number following the last stamp in the previous production. For example, if the last stamp was PROD000500, set the start to 501.
