The Display panel sets the default sort order for files in the document browser. Choose Filename (natural order, the default), Chronological (oldest first), Reverse Chronological (newest first), or Alphabetical (A-Z). This setting applies to all members on the case.
File sort order
The File Sort Order setting controls how files appear in the document browser sidebar. Four options are available:
- Filename (Natural Order) - Files are sorted by filename with numbers compared numerically. For example, #4.pdf comes before #11.pdf. This is the default for new cases.
- Chronological (Oldest First) - Files are sorted by their document date from earliest to most recent. This is useful for reviewing documents in the order events occurred.
- Reverse Chronological (Newest First) - Files are sorted from most recent to earliest. This is helpful when you want to prioritize recent documents.
- Alphabetical (A-Z) - Files are sorted by file name in ascending alphabetical order. This works well when you have a consistent naming convention.
How display order works
The sort order takes effect immediately after saving and applies to all case members. The document browser sidebar, Table of Contents, and file listings within the case respect this setting. If a file doesn't have a date, chronological sorting places it after all dated files.

What happens to files without a date in chronological mode?
Files without a recognized document date are placed after all dated files in chronological and reverse chronological modes.
