Last updated: 2026-03-23

The Custodians panel in Case Settings gives you a centralized view for managing all custodians in a case. Add new custodians, view file counts, rename existing ones, and delete those no longer needed. For full custodian management details, see the dedicated Custodians section.

Adding a custodian in case settings

Type the custodian's name in the text field at the top of the panel and click Add or press Enter. Names must be between 1 and 100 characters and unique within the case. The new custodian appears immediately in the alphabetically sorted list.

Custodian list

The Custodians list shows every custodian in the case, sorted alphabetically. Each row displays the custodian name, a file count showing how many documents are assigned, and a "Default" badge if applicable. Two action buttons appear on each row:

  • Edit - Opens a dialog to rename the custodian.
  • Delete - Opens a confirmation dialog to remove the custodian. Deleting a custodian removes all file assignments for that custodian.

Relationship to the Custodians section

This settings panel is one of several ways to manage custodians in Hintyr. You can also create custodians from the file context menu and during file upload. For complete guidance on all custodian workflows -- assigning files, bulk operations, and exporting -- see the Custodians section.

Frequently asked questions

What happens to files when I delete a custodian?
Deleting a custodian removes the custodian record and all file-to-custodian assignments. The files themselves remain in the case and are not deleted.
Can I rename a custodian?
Yes. Click the edit icon next to a custodian name to open the rename dialog. The new name must still be unique within the case.
Is there a limit to the number of custodians?
There is no hard limit. You can create as many custodians as your matter requires.
