Bates Integration

Redactions and Bates numbering work together in Hintyr. Apply them in either order, and each operation preserves the other. The document viewer always shows the most current version with all modifications visible.

Redacting a Bates-stamped document

If a file has already been Bates-stamped, you can still apply redactions to it. Bates stamps stay intact after redactions are applied. Stamp positions, numbering sequence, and formatting are all preserved. This lets you add redactions to a production set after Bates numbering is already done.

Some teams prefer to Bates-stamp first, then redact. Others redact first, then Bates-stamp. Hintyr supports both workflows without any special configuration.

Bates-stamping a redacted document

If a file has already been redacted, you can still apply Bates numbers. Redactions are preserved, and Bates stamps appear in their configured position. Redacted areas stay as solid black boxes, and Bates numbers show in the designated location (typically the footer or header).

For pages that have been fully redacted using page redaction, Bates stamps render in white text on the black background. This keeps the Bates number visible and readable on every page, including fully redacted ones, maintaining numbering continuity throughout the production set.

Removing Bates stamps from a redacted document

To remove Bates numbers from a file that also has redactions, the Remove Bates revert option removes only the Bates stamps. All redactions stay applied and redacted content remains permanently removed. Use this when you need to reassign Bates numbers (for example, if the numbering sequence changed) without redoing your redaction work.

Similarly, Remove Redactions removes only the redactions while keeping Bates stamps. Restore Original removes both. These granular revert options mean you never redo work unnecessarily. See the reverting redactions guide for a full explanation of each revert option.

Viewing the current version

The document viewer always shows the most current version of a file. If a file has been both redacted and Bates-stamped, you'll see black boxes where redactions were applied and Bates numbers in their configured positions. No need to switch between views or versions to see the complete state.

The stamped views feature lets you compare original and modified versions side by side. This helps when auditing which content was redacted or verifying that Bates numbers are correctly placed.

Order of operations for redaction and Bates numbering

There's no required order for applying redactions and Bates numbers. Both workflows are fully supported:

  • Redact first, then Bates-stamp - Redact sensitive content, then add Bates numbers to the redacted document. Bates stamps appear alongside the redacted areas.
  • Bates-stamp first, then redact - Assign Bates numbers to the production set, then go back and apply redactions. Bates stamps are preserved through the redaction process.

Choose the order that fits your team's workflow. The end result is the same regardless of which operation comes first.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to redact before or after Bates-stamping?
Either order works. Redact first then Bates-stamp, or Bates-stamp first then redact. Each operation preserves the other.
Are Bates stamps visible on fully redacted pages?
Yes. On fully redacted pages (solid black), Bates stamps render in white text so they stay visible and readable.
Can I remove just the Bates stamps without affecting redactions?
Yes. The Remove Bates revert option removes only the Bates stamps. All redactions remain applied.
What does the viewer show for a file with both modifications?
The viewer shows the most current version: redacted areas as black boxes and Bates numbers in their configured positions. Both appear simultaneously.
