Reverting Redactions

Last updated: 2026-03-23

Hintyr gives you three revert options for files that have been redacted or Bates-stamped: remove redactions only, remove Bates stamps only, or restore the original file entirely. Each option gives you precise control over which changes to undo.

Accessing redaction revert options

To revert a file, open the file menu and go to the Revert submenu. Three options appear depending on what has been applied. Options that don't apply to the current file state are hidden. For example, if a file has only been redacted but not Bates-stamped, the Bates removal option won't appear.

Remove Redactions

Select Remove Redactions to undo all redactions while keeping any Bates stamps on the file. The document returns to its pre-redaction content, but Bates numbering stays in place. Use this when you need to redo redactions without losing your Bates stamp assignments.

What changes: All redaction marks (black boxes) are removed. The original content beneath them is restored.

What stays: Bates stamps remain on the document with the original page numbering intact.

Remove Bates

Select Remove Bates to strip all Bates stamps from the file while keeping any redactions. The Bates numbers disappear, but redacted areas stay as solid black boxes. Use this when you need to reassign Bates numbers without redoing your redaction work.

What changes: All Bates stamp markings are removed from the document pages.

What stays: All redactions remain applied. Redacted content stays permanently removed.

Restore Original to undo all redactions

Select Restore Original to remove all modifications and return the file to its unmodified state. This strips both redactions and Bates stamps. The file reverts to match the version first uploaded to the case.

What changes: All redactions and Bates stamps are removed. Document content is fully restored.

What stays: Nothing. The file returns to its original state. To re-apply redactions or Bates numbers, start those workflows again from the beginning.

Choosing the right revert option for your production workflow

These three options let you undo modifications independently, which is important for clawback situations under FRE 502(b) where inadvertently produced privileged material must be corrected and re-produced. It also matters because redaction and Bates numbering are often applied at different stages of the production workflow. Being able to undo one without affecting the other saves significant rework. For example, if you discover a missed Social Security number, remove redactions, re-redact the document correctly, and keep the existing Bates stamps.

Frequently asked questions

Can I selectively undo specific redactions?
No. Remove Redactions removes all redactions at once. You can't undo individual redactions after they've been applied. If you need different redactions, remove them all and re-apply only the ones you need.
Is the revert action reversible?
Revert actions can't be undone. However, Hintyr preserves the original file, so you can always access original content. If you revert redactions and want them back, you'll need to re-apply them.
Does reverting affect other files in the case?
No. Revert operations apply only to the file you select. Other files in the case aren't affected.
What happens in the viewer after reverting?
The viewer immediately shows the reverted version. If you removed redactions, the original content is visible again. If you removed Bates stamps, the stamps disappear from the pages.
