When a file has been redacted or Bates-stamped, you want to see the most production-ready version by default. The viewer handles this automatically. It prioritizes the redacted view first, then the Bates stamped view, then the original. You can remove applied processing at any time through the Revert option in the file actions menu.
Bates stamped view and redacted view priority
When you open a file, Hintyr picks the version to display based on a priority order. The most processed version takes precedence, so you always see the file in its most review-ready state. Here's how the priority works:
- Redacted view - If the file has redactions applied, whether manually or through the agent, the redacted view displays first. This keeps sensitive content hidden by default.
- Bates stamped view - If the file has Bates numbers but no redactions, the Bates stamped view displays. This version includes page numbers printed on each page.
- Original version - If no redactions or Bates numbers have been applied, the original file displays exactly as it was uploaded.
This priority system means you'll see the most review-ready version of each file by default. The redacted view takes highest priority so sensitive content stays hidden. The Bates stamped view takes precedence over originals so you see production-ready pages during review.
If a file has both redactions and Bates numbers, you'll see the redacted view. Bates numbers are applied to the redacted version of the file, so that single view includes both the redactions and the Bates stamps together.
How to identify the current Bates stamped view or redacted view
The viewer gives you visual indicators so you can tell which version of a file you're looking at. When you're viewing a redacted version, a label shows that redactions have been applied. Redacted areas appear as black boxes covering the original content, making them easy to spot on the page.
When you're viewing a Bates stamped version, the Bates numbers are visible on each page, typically at the bottom. The numbering follows the format and position you configured when the Bates numbers were applied. If you see page numbers in the Bates format, you know you're looking at the stamped view of the document.
When you're viewing the original file, no additional markings or labels appear. The file looks exactly as it did when uploaded. If you're not sure which version you're looking at, check the file actions menu for details about what processing has been applied.
Reverting from a Bates stamped view or redacted view to the original
Sometimes you need to remove redactions or Bates stamps from a file and return it to an earlier state. The Revert option in the file actions menu lets you undo specific types of processing. Here's how to revert a file:
- Click the three-dot button on the file row in the document browser to open the file actions menu.
- Select Revert from the menu.
- Choose the revert action you need: Remove Redactions to strip redactions, Remove Bates to remove Bates stamps, or Restore Original to undo all modifications.
Reverting removes the selected processing from the file. For example, Remove Redactions strips all redactions and restores the unredacted version. Remove Bates removes the Bates number stamps. And Restore Original undoes all modifications and returns the file to its original uploaded state. After reverting, you can re-apply redactions or Bates numbers if needed.
This comes in handy when you need to correct redaction placements, re-stamp pages with a different Bates prefix, or start the production workflow over. Your original uploaded file is always preserved, no matter how many processing steps have been applied.
