Custodian Acknowledgment

Last updated: 2026-05-16

A custodian acknowledgment is a custodian's confirmed receipt and understanding of a preservation notice. It creates an evidentiary record that the custodian saw the notice, understood the scope, and committed to preserving the listed materials.

Engagement states

Hintyr tracks four engagement states per recipient: pending (notice queued), delivered (recipient mailbox accepted the message), read (recipient opened the acknowledgment page), and acknowledged (recipient submitted the attestation). An additional state, escalated, applies when a recipient misses the cadence window and the system sends a reminder.

For acknowledgments collected on paper, in person, or by phone, an attorney can record an offline acknowledgment using Tracking acknowledgments.
