Discovery users can upload files to tags where they have Upload permission. The upload button appears only when at least one tag grants upload access. During upload, you select a target tag and can optionally assign a custodian.

When discovery portal uploading is available

The upload button appears in the discovery case view only if you have Upload permission on at least one tag. If you have only View permissions across all tags, the upload button won't appear. This prevents confusion by hiding functionality you can't use.

Selecting a target tag

When you click the upload button, you're prompted to select a target tag from a dropdown listing only the tags you have Upload permission for. If you have Upload access to only one tag, that tag is pre-selected. Files upload directly into the selected tag.

Assigning a custodian during upload

The upload dialog includes an optional custodian dropdown. If the case has custodians configured, you can select one from the list to associate with the uploaded files. This is useful when submitting documents on behalf of a specific individual or entity. If you skip the custodian selection, files are uploaded without a custodian assignment.

File processing after upload

Files uploaded by discovery users go through the same processing pipeline as files uploaded by organization members. They're stored securely, and text extraction runs automatically for supported formats. Once processed, the files appear in the tag for all users with access -- both organization members and other discovery users who have View permission on that tag.

Supported file types

Discovery users can upload any file type supported by Hintyr, including PDFs, Microsoft Office documents, images, emails, and other common document formats. The same file size limits that apply to organization members also apply to discovery user uploads.

Frequently asked questions

Can discovery users upload to multiple tags at once?
Each upload batch targets a single tag. To upload files to different tags, the user completes separate uploads for each tag.
Can I see who uploaded a file?
Yes. Organization members can see file upload metadata, including which user uploaded each file. This information is not visible to other discovery users.
Can discovery users delete files they uploaded?
No. Discovery users cannot delete files. Only organization members with appropriate permissions can remove files from the case.
What happens if Upload permission is revoked after files were uploaded?
Files that were already uploaded remain in the case. The user loses the ability to upload new files but retains View access if that permission is still granted.
