Dual Access

Last updated: 2026-03-23

Users who are both organization members and discovery users on other cases have dual access. They switch between their organization dashboard and discovery dashboard using a toggle button. Each dashboard shows the appropriate set of cases.

When discovery portal dual access applies

Dual access occurs when a single user account is both an organization member and a discovery user on cases belonging to a different organization. This is common for attorneys who work at a firm (organization member) and are also invited to view documents shared by opposing counsel or co-counsel in other matters.

When Hintyr detects that you have both organization membership and discovery access, it displays a switch button in the dashboard header. This lets you toggle between the two dashboards without signing out or switching accounts.

Organization dashboard

When Organization is selected, you see the standard Hintyr dashboard with all cases within your organization. This includes the full feature set: case creation, AI chat, notes, redactions, tags, custodians, and productions.

Discovery dashboard

When Discovery is selected, you see the simplified Discovery Dashboard showing only the cases you've been invited to as a discovery user. Each case uses the discovery interface with tag-based folder browsing, version badges, and the simplified context menu. Organization-level features aren't available in this view.

Switching between dashboards

The switch button sits in the dashboard header and is visible only to users with dual access. Click the inactive option to switch views immediately. The active option is highlighted. The switch applies only at the dashboard level -- once you open a specific case, the interface adapts automatically based on whether it's an organization case or a discovery case.

Data separation

Organization cases and discovery cases are completely separate. Work product, notes, AI analysis, and other data from organization cases never appear in the discovery dashboard, and vice versa. The dual access toggle determines which set of cases the dashboard displays. Each case retains its own access controls regardless of your other roles.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a separate account for discovery access?
No. A single account can have both organization membership and discovery access. The platform detects dual access automatically and shows the switch button.
Can I be a discovery user on a case within my own organization?
Discovery access is designed for cross-organization sharing. Within your own organization, you access cases through standard organization membership and permissions.
Will my organization see my activity on discovery cases?
No. Activity on discovery cases is separate from your organization. Organization administrators cannot see which discovery cases you have been invited to or your activity within them.
What if I only have discovery access and no organization?
Users with only discovery access see the Discovery Dashboard directly when they sign in. No switch button appears because there is no organization dashboard to switch to.
