Spreadsheet Viewer

Last updated: 2026-03-23

Spreadsheet data often holds the details that matter most in a review, but opening files outside your browser slows everything down. The spreadsheet viewer displays CSV, TSV, XLS, XLSX, XLSM, XLSB, and ODS files in a familiar tabular layout with multi-sheet navigation and zoom controls. No downloads or external apps needed.

Supported spreadsheet formats

The spreadsheet viewer covers everything from simple comma-separated text files to multi-sheet Excel workbooks. Click any spreadsheet file in the document browser to open it. Here are the supported formats:

  • CSV - Comma-separated values. The simplest and most widely used tabular format.
  • TSV - Tab-separated values, commonly exported from database tools and analytics platforms.
  • XLS - The legacy Excel format from older versions of Microsoft Office.
  • XLSX - The modern Excel format and the most common spreadsheet format in use today.
  • XLSM - Excel files with macros. The viewer shows the data content but doesn't run macros.
  • XLSB - Excel binary workbook format, typically used for very large spreadsheets.
  • ODS - OpenDocument Spreadsheet format, used by LibreOffice and other open-source office suites.

All spreadsheet content is extracted and indexed during processing. The agent can search across cell values and column headers to find the data points that matter during your review.

Multi-sheet navigation in the spreadsheet viewer

Many Excel and ODS workbooks contain multiple sheets, each with different data sets or perspectives. The viewer displays sheet tabs above the table area so you can switch between them quickly. Click any tab to load that sheet and view its contents.

Each tab shows the original sheet name from the workbook, so it's easy to find the data you need. When a workbook has many sheets, the tab bar scrolls so you can locate the right one. The active sheet is highlighted, so you always know which one you're viewing.

CSV and TSV files only contain a single data table, so they display without sheet tabs. They render as a scrollable table of rows and columns.

Spreadsheet viewer limitations

There are a few things to keep in mind. The viewer displays the first 1,000 data rows of each sheet. For spreadsheets with more rows, a notice tells you how many rows exist. Download the file to see everything. Spreadsheet files also aren't eligible for Bates numbering or redaction. Because they don't have a fixed page layout, they can't receive a Bates stamped view or have redaction boxes applied to specific cells.

If you need to Bates-stamp or redact a spreadsheet, export it as a PDF from your spreadsheet application and upload that PDF to Hintyr. The PDF version supports full Bates stamping and redaction through the PDF viewer.

Formulas and calculated cells show the last-saved computed values from the file, not the formulas themselves. Conditional formatting, charts, and pivot tables don't render in the viewer. However, the underlying data values are still accessible and searchable during your review.

Frequently asked questions

Can I edit spreadsheet data in the viewer?
No. The spreadsheet viewer is read-only and built for document review. It shows the first 1,000 rows of each sheet as they were uploaded. To edit a spreadsheet or see all rows, download it from the file actions menu, make your changes in a spreadsheet application, and re-upload it.
Why can I not apply Bates numbers to a spreadsheet?
Bates numbering requires a fixed page layout, which spreadsheets don't have. Rows and columns adjust based on content width and screen size. To get a Bates stamped view, export the spreadsheet as a PDF first and upload the PDF to Hintyr.
Can the agent search for data inside spreadsheets?
Yes. All cell values and column headers are extracted and indexed during processing. The agent can find specific values, spot patterns, and reference spreadsheet content in its responses while you review.
