Hintyr has two types of document review notes: group notes that all case members can view and edit, and private notes visible only to you. Choose the type based on whether your work product should be shared with the review team.
Group notes for collaborative work product
Group notes are shared with every member of the case. When you create one, all users with case access can see it in their notes panel, open it, read it, and make edits. Group notes work well for team-wide work product such as review memoranda, privilege logs, issue spotting, and coordinated analysis.
Because group notes support real-time collaborative editing, multiple team members can work on the same note at the same time. Changes appear for everyone, and each collaborator'scursor is visible with their name. This removes the need to pass files back and forth or merge edits by hand.
A group icon in the tab bar identifies group notes. Any case member with editor or admin access can create, rename, and delete them. Members with read-only access can view group notes but can't edit.
Private notes for attorney work product
Private notes are visible only to you. No other case member can see, open, or edit them. Use private notes for attorney work product, preliminary privilege analysis, draft observations, or any content you want to keep separate from the team's shared workspace.
Private notes have the same rich text editing as group notes, including all formatting options, headings, lists, and tables. The key differences: private notes aren't shared with the team, and they don't support collaborative editing. You're the only person who can access a private note.
A lock icon in the tab bar identifies private notes, giving you a clear visual cue that the content is for your eyes only.
How to create each note type
Create both note types from the notes panel menu. Click the menu button to see your options:
- New Group Note - Creates a shared note that all case members can view and edit.
- New Private Note - Creates a personal note visible only to you.
The note opens in a tab right after creation. Start writing immediately, and rename it by double-clicking the tab title.
When to use group notes vs. private notes
The right note type depends on what you're writing and whether the team should see it. Here are some common scenarios:
Use group notes for
- Shared review analysis - Observations and findings that the entire review team should see and contribute to.
- Privilege logs - Collaborative tracking of documents protected by attorney-client privilege or the work product doctrine.
- Review coordination - Task assignments, review progress, and team-wide status notes for document review workflows.
- Issue summaries - Key findings organized by legal issue or topic for team visibility.
Use private notes for
- Attorney observations - Initial impressions and mental impressions you want to develop before sharing.
- Privilege strategy - Sensitive analysis of attorney-client privilege claims that should remain confidential.
- Draft work product - Analysis in progress that is not ready for team review.
- Personal reminders - Follow-up items and to-do lists for your own reference during document review.
Visual indicators for note types
Each note type has a distinct icon in the tab bar so you can tell at a glance whether a note is shared or personal:
- Group icon - Indicates a group note that is visible to all case members.
- Lock icon - Indicates a private note that is visible only to you.
These icons appear next to every note title, so there's never ambiguity about who can see a note's content. The icons show on plans that support multiple collaborators. On single-user plans, type icons are hidden because all notes are inherently personal.
