The case notes editor has a rich text toolbar for formatting your document review notes. Apply bold, italic, headings, lists, code blocks, tables, and more with toolbar buttons or keyboard shortcuts.

Rich text formatting options for your notes

Case notes toolbar buttons

The toolbar sits at the top of the notes editor and gives you one-click access to all formatting options. Select text and click a toolbar button to format it. You can also place your cursor and click a button to toggle the format for text you type next. Each button highlights when its format is active.

Text formatting

  • Bold - Emphasize important terms and key findings.
  • Italic - Mark case names, statutory references, or terms of art.
  • Underline - Draw attention to specific phrases.
  • Strikethrough - Indicate removed or superseded content without deleting it.

Headings

Use headings to organize your notes into sections. The toolbar has a heading button that cycles through levels. Headings help structure longer notes, especially when you're covering multiple topics or documents in a single note.

  • H1 - Top-level section heading for major topics.
  • H2 - Sub-section heading for organizing within a topic.
  • H3 - Finer-grained heading for detailed breakdowns.

Lists

Lists help you organize observations, action items, and key points in a scannable format. Two list types are available:

  • Bullet list - Unordered items for collections of observations or findings.
  • Numbered list - Ordered items for sequential steps, ranked findings, or chronological events.

Additional formatting options

  • Highlight - Apply a background color to draw attention to critical passages.
  • Links - Insert clickable hyperlinks to external resources or references.
  • Tables - Create structured data layouts for comparisons, privilege logs, or tracking grids.

Font size in case notes

The toolbar includes a font size selector. Available sizes range from 10px to 32px. The default works for body text, while larger sizes work well for callouts or emphasis within a section.

Select the text you want to resize and choose a size from the dropdown. You can also pick a size before typing to apply it to new text. The toolbar shows the current size.

Text alignment options

Align text to the left, center, or right. Left is the default and works for most content. Center works well for titles or section dividers. Right alignment fits dates, page numbers, or signatures in exported notes.

Place your cursor on the line you want to adjust and click the alignment button. The dropdown shows left, center, and right options with icons.

Keyboard shortcuts for case notes formatting

For faster formatting, use keyboard shortcuts instead of toolbar buttons. These work while typing in the notes editor:

  • Ctrl+B Bold
  • Ctrl+I Italic
  • Ctrl+U Underline
  • Ctrl+Shift+S Strikethrough
  • Ctrl+Z Undo
  • Ctrl+Shift+Z Redo

On macOS, replace Ctrl with Cmd. Undo and redo are especially useful for reverting formatting changes or recovering deleted text.

Formatting FAQ

Does formatting carry over when exporting case notes?
Yes. When you export or print a case note, formatting is preserved. Bold text, headings, lists, tables, and alignment all appear in the exported output and closely match what you see in the editor.
Can I paste formatted text into case notes from other applications?
Yes. When you paste content from a word processor, email client, or web page, Hintyr carries over common formatting such as bold, italic, and lists. Results may vary depending on the source application.
Does the case notes editor support Markdown syntax?
The editor uses a visual toolbar for formatting. It does not accept Markdown syntax for input, but the toolbar buttons and keyboard shortcuts cover the same formatting options.
How do I remove formatting from text in case notes?
Select the text and click the active formatting button to toggle it off. For example, if text is bold, select it and click Bold to remove the styling. You can also use Ctrl+Z (or Cmd+Z on macOS) to undo.
