Interface Overview

Last updated: 2026-03-23

When you open a case, you see three panels: a document browser on the left, a viewer in the center, and the AI agent plus notes on the right. A top toolbar gives you quick access to uploads, processing status, and case settings.

The three-panel layout

Your case workspace shows three panels side by side so you can browse, read, and analyze documents without switching screens. Each panel serves a distinct purpose. Drag the dividers between them to resize any panel to your preference.

Left panel: document browser

The left panel is your main way to find and browse documents. Three tabs at the top give you different ways to locate files:

Uploads tab

Every file you upload to the case appears here in the order it was added. Each entry shows the file name, type, and processing status. Click any file to open it in the center panel. Start here when you want to find a recent upload or browse all your case files. For more details, see Uploads tab.

Table of contents tab

Hintyr builds a structured table of contents from your uploads automatically. Your files appear in a clickable hierarchy, which is easier to browse than a flat list when you are working with large document sets. For more details, see Table of contents.

Tags tab

Filter your documents by the tags you have applied. Tags are labels you create and assign to fit your review: "Responsive," "Privileged," "Hot Document," and so on. Click a tag to see only files with that label. For more details, see Tags tab.

Center panel: document viewer

Your selected document appears here. Click a file in the left panel to open it. The viewer handles many formats directly in your browser:

  • PDFs render with high-fidelity display, zoom, and scroll.
  • Images (JPG, PNG, TIFF, and others) display with zoom and fit-to-width controls.
  • Office documents (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) are converted for in-browser reading, so you do not need to download them.
  • Video and audio files play directly in the viewer with standard playback controls.
  • Email files show headers, body text, and attachment listings.

When the AI agent cites a passage, you can click the citation to scroll the viewer to that location. This lets you verify the source without searching for it manually.

Right panel: AI agent and case notes

The right panel holds the AI agent and your case notes. You will find two sections here:

AI agent

Type a question and the agent searches your case documents for relevant information. Each answer includes citations linking to specific documents and passages so you can verify the source. You can ask follow-up questions, and the agent keeps context throughout your conversation.

Case notes

Below the AI agent is a shared writing space. Jot down observations, summarize findings, or track open questions as you review. All case members can see your notes, and edits sync across users automatically.

The toolbar

A toolbar runs across the top of your workspace with shortcuts to common actions:

  • Upload - Opens the upload dialog so you can add new documents.
  • Processing indicator - Shows you the file processing progress and count. It disappears when all files are ready.
  • Case Menu - A dropdown with advanced features and your case settings (see below).

The case menu

The case menu holds advanced features and settings. Click the menu icon to access:

  • Settings - Edit your case title and description, manage members and roles, configure Bates numbering, and adjust other options.
  • Deduplicate Files - Find and remove duplicate files to keep your review set clean.
  • Keyword Search & Redaction - Search all your documents for specific terms and redact sensitive content before production.
  • TAR Validation - Run technology-assisted review (TAR) validation to measure and document your review effectiveness.
  • Production Export - Build production-ready document sets with Bates numbering and export them for delivery.
  • Delete Case - Permanently delete the case, including all documents, notes, and AI conversations. Only admins can do this, and deletion cannot be undone.

Resizing and navigating panels

Drag the dividers between panels to adjust their width. If you are reading a long document, pull the left divider to widen the viewer. Need more room for the AI agent? Drag the right divider to expand that panel.

The panels work together. Click a document on the left to open it in the center. Click an AI citation on the right to scroll the viewer to that passage. You can move between browsing, reading, and analyzing without losing your place.

Frequently asked questions

Can I collapse or hide a panel?
Yes. Drag the dividers to make any panel very narrow. This minimizes it while keeping the layout intact.
Does the layout change on smaller screens?
On smaller screens, the panels stack or adapt to fit the available space. The document browser may collapse into a slide-out drawer to give the viewer and AI panel more room.
Are there keyboard shortcuts?
Yes. Hintyr supports keyboard shortcuts for common actions like switching tabs, scrolling through documents, and focusing the AI input field.
Where do I find case settings?
Open the Case Menu in the toolbar (next to the Upload button) and select Settings. From there, you can edit the title, description, and team members.
